As the search for Edu’s “mystery winger” continues, Arsenal starts discussions to acquire Facundo Torres in January. |
Edu Gaspar, the technical director of Arsenal, has been looking for a “mystery winger” to complement Mikel Arteta’s team and rival Bukayo Saka.
The Gunners are still interested in Mykhaylo Mudryk from Shakhtar Donetsk, but Edu was turned off by the Ukrainian club’s £100 million price during the summer transfer window. Pedro Neto, a standout for Wolves, has long caught Arsenal’s attention. However, a deal never happened because the Midlands club placed a £50 million price tag on the 22-year-old winger.
Another player whose transfer to the Emirates Stadium was rumored to happen was Villarreal’s Yeremy Pino, but the Gunners again chose not to act, despite the young Spaniard’s release clause being in the neighborhood of £32 million. Edu is currently attempting to sign Orlando City player Facundo Torres as part of their quest for a new winger to add to Arteta’s team.
The Evening Standard reports that Torres, who has excelled in the MLS this season with nine goals and 10 assists, is a player Arsenal is contemplating signing in January. The Gunners are scheduled to speak with the agent of the Uruguayan international as they look for a right winger to replace Saka, who sustained an ankle injury during the 5-0 victory against Nottingham Forest on Sunday.
Torres went to Orlando in January after playing and scoring against Arsenal in a preseason friendly during the summer’s preseason tour of America by the Gunners. The 22-year-old signed a four-year contract with an additional 12-month option after leaving Uruguayan club Penarol for about £7.75 million.
Toni Lima’s observations are said to have contributed in some little way to Arsenal’s interest in Torres. Since Emirates Stadium’s technical director Edu was hired there in 2019, the organization has changed its approach to hiring players to one that is more data-driven.
Since her appointment in 2021, Lima has established a reputation for spotting South American talent. She is noted with being one of the first to recognize Philippe Coutinho and Neymar, the stars of former Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain, respectively.
If the Gunners want to continue competing at the top of the Premier League standings, along with competing in domestic cup competitions and the Europa League as they strive to qualify for the UEFA Champions League again next season, they will need reinforcements in January.
